The needs of a Veteran returning to civilian life. Basic Stuff. Housing, Food, Furnishings, Companionship, A JOB, maybe? Can we rely on the Government for these necessities? I was aware of the answer here long before I archived articles & videos regarding what is referred to as the “VA Scandal”. 1. What can We do? Why? NO. Why not? Who is doing it? Meet Penny Lambright, founder of Patriots and Paws, who took on these issues when she started sending care packages to her nephew and soldiers overseas. 2.
An interview with Penny is like watching a Tornado of energy. Phone call. Email. Print this. Organize volunteers. Publicize Events. Coordinate donors and Sponsors. And then I get; “What was your question again?” A recent Fund Raiser at Patriots and Paws boasted attendees/ sponsors such as Volunteers of America, Santa Ana, CA, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 756, Long Beach, Veterans Affordable Housing Program, Orange, CA, Special Forces Association Chapter 78, Lakewood, CA & Yes, VA Hospital of Long Beach, CA, who had a fully outfitted health services Motor Home at the Event. There was breakfast and lunch served for $5.00 and volunteers outnumbered attendees for part of the day. The North Orange County Cruisers showed up to support the event with their classic cars.
Penny emphasizes; “We are a cashless thrift store because everything we do for Veterans is deserved. They paid the price by serving our Country.” Donations of household items & furniture arrive or are picked up, sorted and stored in racks in a warehouse that is pretty much packed to the rafters. Her staff of Volunteers gets overloaded near month end for pick ups from many donors. She emphasizes donations should be clean and usable.Veterans make appointments and come in and “shop”; for Free. Deliveries can be arranged as well. Her Partners & Sponsors vary, a testament to her resolve and dedication.
